Below is a timeline of major events in Hebrew history.

c. 1200 BCE Israelites settle in Canaan.

c. 1020 BCE Saul anointed first king of Israel.

c. 1000–961 BCE King David rules over a united Israel.

c. 965 BCE King Solomon begins building the First Temple in Jerusalem.

c. 922 BCE The united Israelite kingdom splits in two—the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

722 BCE Sargon II of Assyria conquers the Northern Kingdom and exiles many of the inhabitants.

586 BCE Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylonia conquers Judah, destroys the Temple, and exiles thousands to Babylon.

538 BCE King Cyrus of Persia conquers Babylonia and allows Jews to return to the land of Israel (though many choose to remain in Babylonia).

c. 516 BCE The Second Temple is built in Jerusalem.

332 BCE Alexander the Great conquers the Persian Empire, including the land of Israel.

3rd century BCE. Early Jewish prayer houses are documented in the Diaspora.

c. 167 BCE The Maccabean revolt against the Syrian Greeks achieves relative independence for the Jews. The holiday of Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple.

63 BCE The Roman Empire controls the land of Israel; the area called Judea (including Jerusalem) becomes a client kingdom of Rome.

37 BCE King Herod of Judea refurbishes the Second Temple.

6 CE Rome annexes Judea.

66 CE The first Jewish revolt against Rome begins.

68 CE Rabbi Yohanan ben Zakkai receives permission from Roman authorities to establish a rabbinical academy in the coastal city of Yavneh. This helps set the stage for the emergence of modern rabbinic Judaism.

70 CE The Romans destroy Jerusalem and the Second Temple.

132–135 CEShimon bar-Kokhba leads the second Jewish revolt against Rome. Roman Emperor Hadrian eventually crushes the rebellion and expels the Jews from Jerusalem.

c. 210 CERabbi Yehudah ha-Nasi edits the Mishnah.

c. 400 CEThe Palestinian Talmud is completed.

Analyzes the history of the Judaism throughout the ages and provides insight into the main teachings of Judaism. The program also looks into special holidays and festivals celebrated by Jewish people.

1. Complete a Vocabulary Review on School Net.

2. Students will use their graphic organizer (EQ #1 - How did the ancient Hebrews impact future religions and societies?) and answer the essential question. Complete this activity individually and then as a group.

3. Review information on graphic organizer. As a group, choose the 3 most important concepts regarding the ancient Hebrews. Place this information on a sticky note. Share as a whole class and place on the big cabinet.

4. Complete Hebrews Migration Mapskills Activity. Use your Map of the Ancient Near East. Click on the PDF file below and follow all directions.

5. Using the back of the graphic organizer from Steps 2 and 3 - make a 3 circle Venn Diagram. Label each circle one of the following: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Research the 3 religions and fill in the graphic organizer.

6. Report back to your group to discuss.

Objective: Design a Collage on key information of the ancient Hebrews.


Design a collage using visuals/words to explain how the ancient Hebrews influenced religion and societies (past and present)....This will be done in your group - No Work = No Credit!=

In your collage you will need the following:

1. A title somewhere in the collage. The title can be: the essential question, the ancient Hebrews, Judaism, etc.

2. A collage in the shape of something significant (important) to the essential question. Example: in the shape of the country Israel, in the shape of the Star of David, in the shape of a Minorah, etc.

3. Use a minimum of 5 Hebrew Vocabulary terms in your collage (visual or word) format.

4. A minimum of 8 visuals

5. A minimum of 4 words

6. Colorful

7. Neat & Organized in a collage format - I know sounds crazy!

8. Complete this collage using printer paper from the back of the room. Make it whatever size you would like.
