Geography

Greece is a peninsula, which means that it is surrounded on three sides by water. Greece has a lot of smaller peninsulas sticking out from it, which means Greece enjoys many natural harbors.
Greece is also covered with mountains. They are not huge mountains but if you are trying to go from place to place in Greece, you'll find the mountains a bit of a hindrance.
Three thousand years ago, it was very difficult to get from place to place in ancient Greece by walking. But it was easy to get from place to place in Greece by boat.
In the ancient world that grew up around the Mediterranean Sea, the Greeks became known as great sailors. They sailed about the Mediterranean, setting up colonies and outposts where they could.
They tried to set up a colony or two in Egypt, but the Egyptians chased them away. They had more luck establishing new towns on the coast of Turkey, on the coast of Italy, on the coast of Africa, and on the coast of France.
Meanwhile, back in mainland Greece, cities were thriving. The soil was mostly fertile. The Greeks had a wealth of seafood, fresh fish, a wealth of vegetables, and fresh drinking water. The Greeks were very happy with their land.

Students were introduced to democracy of the ancient Greek world. Open the power point to follow directions.The focus was on the democracy of the ancient Greeks. Students completed a graphic organizer to take notes and guide them in the lesson. Basic introduction was provided. Then students reviewed and discussed. The next step was to determine who actually was a citizen in ancient Athens........what a surprise for some students!

Greece: Athens vs Sparta

Students will focus on the two most powerful city-states of the ancient Greek world - Athens and Sparta. These two unique cities led to much distrust and hatred. This of course led to war - The Peloponnesian War! Although Sparta proved to be the victors......the downfall affected of of the Greek city-states because eventually they would be conquered by Alexander the Great from Macedonia.

Greece: Alexander the Great



The Golden Age of Greece

What were the major cultural innovations of ancient Greece?

In 480 BCE, Athens, along with other city-states in Greece, had just fought a war with the Persians. Athens had been burned to the ground, and when the inhabitants returned, they focused on rebuilding their city and their culture. This was the beginning of the classical period of ancient Greece, which lasted from approximately 479 BCE to 323 BCE.

During this period, architecture and the arts flourished and philosophy, the search for wisdom, was developed. Philosophy became an important part of life in Athens. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were three Greek philosophers whose works have inspired generations of thinkers.

Greek cultural life also blossomed during this time. The Greeks built palaces and temples that still stand today. The influence of their architecture and sculpture is apparent in many modern buildings and works of art. The religious myths, epic stories, and dramatic plays written by ancient Greeks have also survived. These works have been retold over the years and translated into many languages.

By the end of the classical period, a ruler named Alexander the Great had unified the Greek city-states and conquered large portions of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. As Greek armies spread, the ideas and innovations of ancient Greeks spread with them.

The Ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle

Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle each developed distinctive philosophies that had similarities and differences with other philosophies.

  • Socrates used a method of teaching called the Socratic method.

  • Socrates stressed the pursuit of morality.

  • Plato wrote down the ideas of Socrates in a series of books called dialogues.

  • Plato believed there was an ideal form of all objects and ideas that was beyond the five senses.

  • Plato wrote the Republic, which describes his version of an ideal society and influenced many thinkers throughout history.

  • The ideas in the Republic contradicted the ideas of other ancient philosophies.

  • Aristotle analyzed the process of logical thinking.

  • Aristotle believed that in the real world a constitutional monarchy was the best form of government.

Why Does It Matter?

The philosophies of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle greatly influenced political and cultural life in ancient Greece. These philosophies were passed on through the ages and influenced leaders throughout Western history.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, Christian, Jewish, and Arab scholars admired the writings of Aristotle.

Important Achievements of the Ancient Greeks

The ancient Greeks were responsible for many cultural achievements that influenced societies around them as well as future civilizations.
  • The ancient Greeks developed the first version of democracy.
  • The ancient Greeks developed a complex mythology that influenced Roman mythology.
  • The Olympic Games began in ancient Greece as part of a religious festival.
  • The Greek language forms the basis of many English words.
  • Homer wrote the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey.
  • Greek drama included comedy and tragedy.
  • Sophocles wrote many great tragedies, including Oedipus Rex.

Why Does It Matter?

Greek democracy had a strong effect on the formation of later democracies, including the United States. Greek mythology still influences modern culture. The Olympic Games are today among the largest international sporting events in the world. The works of the ancient Greek writers are depicted through books, theater, and film in today’s world.

The ancient Greeks dedicated the temple called the Parthenon, located in Athens, to the goddess Athena.

Religion in Ancient Greece

What type of religion did the ancient Greeks practice?

The Ancient Greeks practiced polytheism, or the belief in many gods. They believed that the 12 major gods and goddesses, known as Olympians, lived on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. The Greeks also believed in other minor gods, as well as beings that were part god and part mortal, known as demigods. Achilles, one of the most famous demigods, was the son of a nymph, or nature spirit, and a human king. Each city-state paid special homage, through acts such as the construction of temples, to one or more deities who they believed in turn protected their city. City-states often held festivals to honor the gods and goddess that protected their cities.

The Olympics

What were the Olympics?

In ancient Greece, athletic events often played an important part in religious festivals. In fact, some scholars believe the Greeks first organized athletic games as part of funeral rituals during the 1200s BCE. Eventually, the Olympic Games, honoring the god Zeus, became the most important athletic religious festival. The earliest record of an Olympic competition dates to 776 BCE. The competition was open to free Greek men, and participants from many city-states came to compete

Language and Literature in Ancient Greece

What other cultural contributions did the ancient Greeks make?

Literature was an important element of Greek culture. The ancient Greeks wrote many types of literature but were most well known for their poetry and drama. One of the best-known poets was a man named Homer. During the 700s BCE, Homer wrote two of the most influential works ever: the Iliad and the Odyssey. These works are epic poems, or poems that have a long narrative. Although most historians believe Homer is the author of these poems, little evidence of his life exists, and there is some debate about whether he actually existed and if he was in fact the only author of these poems.
